How to know if your NFP is ready for a merger

    16 September 20264 min read

Most not-for-profit leaders don't wake up one morning and decide to merge. The conversation usually starts with a quiet pressure — a funding shortfall that won't close, a CEO who's exhausted, a board that can see the sector consolidating around them. The question is rarely should we merge? It's usually are we even ready to have the conversation?

    Readiness is structural, not emotional

There's a common assumption that merger readiness is about enthusiasm — whether the board is "up for it." In reality, readiness is structural. It lives in your strategic plan, your financial reserves, your leadership capacity, and the strength of your external relationships. A board can be deeply enthusiastic and still not ready.

The organisations that complete mergers successfully tend to share a few traits: a current strategic plan that explicitly contemplates partnership, a CEO with capacity to spend real time on the process, and a board that has already done the hard work of aligning on mission over brand.

    The five dimensions that matter

Through working with for-purpose organisations across Australia, I've come to assess readiness across five dimensions: strategic commitment, team capacity, change fitness, financial readiness, and potential partners. Each one tells you something different about whether a merger is the right next move — or whether there's groundwork to do first.

    Start with evidence, not assumption

The best thing you can do is replace gut feeling with evidence. A merger readiness assessment gives you a clear, honest picture of where you stand across each dimension — so the board conversation moves from "I think we're ready" to "here's exactly what we need to work on."

If you're anything like most leaders I speak with, you've been carrying this question for a while. The assessment takes two minutes and gives you a starting point that's actually grounded in where you are today.

Not sure where you stand? Take the 2-minute Merger Readiness Assessment and get a clear, evidence-based picture of your organisation's position.
